Looking for an outstanding apprentice or trainee?

Like most tradies, you probably have a hard time finding good staff - especially apprentices. An School Based Apprentice or Trainee (SBAT) is what you need.

If you work in the any of the multiple industries for which CITE provides in-school trade training on the Central Coast - schools can work with you to find the right person. There are also financial incentives for taking on an apprentice or trainee through the trade training program.

"What is an SBAT?"

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are more than just part-time jobs - they’re a great way to set students up for a career whilst completing the HSC.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW. They allow students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school.

A School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship combines paid work, training and school; and as well as an industry recognised national qualification students will gain credit towards the HSC.

If you are interested in seeking an SBAT student contact the Principal or Careers Adviser at a central coast public high school. More information on SBAT's is available by following this link; http://www.sbatinnsw.info/

"If I decide to employ a student, is this like having an apprentice?"

Yes. The main difference is that the first year of the apprenticeship is completed over two years at the school. The benefit to you is that you only have to employ the student part-time over this two year period, which gives you the chance to make sure they are right for you and that you can work well together.

"So what happens at the end of the two years?"

You can choose to take on the apprentice for the second year of the apprenticeship (remember, the first year actually takes two years of study at the school), as you would any other second year apprentice. The good thing is, you have had two years of working with them for one day (or more) a week to decide if they are right for the job!

"Are there financial incentives?"

Yes, there are many financial incentives available if you take on a part-time apprentice or trainee. Follow the 'incentives' link for more information.

"How often will I have my apprentice working with me?"

This is flexible and can be arranged to suit you and your work. Generally, one day per week for the two years of the course and full-time during school holiday periods. You can also make arrangements with your apprentice for them to work in a block of time or on weekends and during the school holidays, if you need them. Most students are so keen to work and get experience in the trade, they will be available to take any extra opportunities to work.

"What will I have to pay them?"

Wages for apprentices vary depending on your industry - contact the Group Training Company that you have used for other apprentices for specific details.
